Whiplash and Chiropractic Treatment

What is whiplash?Whiplash

Whiplash occurs when the head is suddenly moved back and forth with great force. The neck is particularly susceptible to injury, since it is the most flexible part of the spine. At HealthSource of Indianapolis we have specialized training to deal with whiplash injuries.

What type of injuries can occur?

Joint Dysfunction-

Whiplash can cause one or more joints in cervical region of
the spine to lose its normal resiliency and natural shock
absorption. This can cause a noticeable restriction of movement.
Pain can occur both in the near term, and later on as the
body's ability to cope with impact is reduced.

Muscle Pain-

Muscles can get stretched and stressed. Whiplash can
cause long-termWhiplash Muscle Strain neck pain. A Chiropractor will often
recommend message therapy in addition to Chiropractic
therapy to aid in the recovery. Early treatment is key to
preventing chronic pain.

Disc Injury-

The discs between the vertebrae create space for nerves
to send information to the brain. Whiplash can cause these
discs to bulge. This can restrict the information being sent to
the brain, or in some cases send pain signals. If the disc's
core comes in contact with a spinal nerve root, a herniated
disc occurs. This can cause shooting pain, numbness,
and muscle weakness.
